ECW’s replacement on Syfy now has a name and a logo. What we don’t know? What exactly the show itself is going to be. Vince McMahon came out on ECW this past week, and proclaimed it would be “the next evolution of WWE programming.”
I, for one, love that he was so vague in attempting to sell this to the fans. If you think about it, that could mean anything. Heck, it might not even be a wrestling show. It might be WWE’s attempt at SNL, featuring wrestlers in short, comedic vignettes. It could be a talk show. It could be a soap opera. It could be a musical. It could be anything.
All those ridiculous options out of the way, I figured I’d sit down and brainstorm a few ideas for what I actually think NXT might end up being. Seeing as how I’m not very creative, I could only come up with a few ideas, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see any of these things happen.
Option 1: WWE bought all of TNA’s old lasers, and uses those lasers to project graphics of wrestlers and famous moments on the ceilings of arenas across the country. This idea flops, and all the executives who okayed the idea are given bonuses and a promotion.
Option 2: WWE moves all of the current ECW wrestlers to either Raw or SmackDown. Well, the ones worth keeping, anyway. After this, they call up all of FCW to make up the new NXT brand. It will be developmental television. People like me would watch just to keep tabs on who we may be seeing on Raw and SmackDown for years to come.
Option 3: The name NXT is an elaborate ruse, and the show becomes a showcase for WWE highlights of yesteryear. Everyone who subscribes to WWE 24/7 will be pissed.
Option 4: This option is my favorite. NXT will become like Superstars, a show for the wrestlers who aren’t the focal points of Raw and SmackDown. This show, however, will have its own storylines and belts. It will be a place where guys like Evan Bourne, Jack Swagger, and Shelton Benjamin can be the benefactors of the pushes that the internet wrestling community has been clamoring for for a long time. I think this could work. The main problem with this? That show essentially becomes what ECW has been the whole time, only with a different roster, and name.
So, as you can see, I have no idea what’s going to happen when NXT debuts in a little over two weeks. I am very anxious to see what they’re going to do, though. Like a good little mark, I’ll be tuning in on February 23, 2010 to see this supposedly amazing new direction. Will you?
