WNA Weekly: Albano’s Passing, McMahon Resigns & More

Welcome to a new edition of WNA Weekly, where we recap the news from the past two weeks. There were two very big stories this week, the first being the passing of WWE legend Captain Lou Albano. The second being Shane McMahon resigning from World Wrestling Entertainment.

– TNA interviewer Lauren noted on her Twitter page earlier this week that she is officially engaged.

– The agent for SNL cast member Andy Samberg denied reports that Samberg would be hosting a future edition of Monday Night Raw.

– World Wrestling Entertainment issued a cease and desist letter to the Wine School of Philadelphia for their use of the word “Smackdown” in a contest. The Wine School was advertised the “Sommelier Smackdown”, in which they pit students against professionals. The school trademarked the term earlier this year.

– Rock legend Ozzy Osbourne is set to host Monday Night Raw next month. At last word, he is set to host the November 3rd edition which takes place in Worchester,MA.

– World Wrestling Entertainment sent out a survey to fans on their mailing lists, asking if they should rename their May PPV “Judgment Day”. The choices were War Games, Multi Mania or Riot Control. It should be noted though that even if War Games is chosen, it will not be a traditional War Games match that was made popular by WCW. Instead the creative team were instructed to watch old war games matches, and see if they can tweak the match.

– Former WWE Diva Torrie Wilson was hospitalized this past week. She apparently had an issue with her thyroid, and when doctors gave her medication, she had an allergic reaction. Her heart rate dropped considerably, down to 30 beats a minute at one point. Doctors were able to stabilize her.

– It was announced on Raw that a Divas Trade was orchestrated. Here is a run down of who has been traded. Mickie James to Smackdown, Rosa Mendes to ECW, The Bella Twins to Raw, Eve to Raw, Melina to Raw, Beth Phoenix to Smackdown.

– As part of the divas trade, WWE had Mickie James drop her Divas Championship to Jillian Hall, only to have Hall drop it to Melina a minute or two later. It was one of the more confusing segments of the night. Reports indicate that James was very upset that she was being traded to Smackdown, to the point she was seen crying backstage. Before her match began on Raw, she kissed her Championship before giving it to the referee. Other reports indicate that WWE officials were not happy with her weight as of late. Also, her in-ring work has diminished as of late, and she had been on WWE officials radar from a match that James had with Gail Kim which was a total disaster.

– The main event for Monday Night Raw this coming Monday will be John Cena taking on Triple H. WWE is billing the match as possibly Cena’s last match on Raw. Rap star Snoop Dogg will be guest hosting the show.

– Former Divas champion Maryse is scheduled to return to television at any time. She had been on the injured list.

– Jim Ross was not on Smackdown this past week because he and his wife were celebrating their anniversary. When news broke that Ross was not at the Smackdown tapings, rumors were brewing that he was considering leaving WWE which were totally bogus.

– The court hearing in regards to Kurt Angle has been postponed to a later date. This is because Trenesha Biggers (Rhaka Khan) failed to appear.

– Smackdown announcer Todd Grisham is getting married today (Saturday). It is believed he will have next week off for his honey moon. There is no word who will replace him at the Smackdown tapings alongside Jim Ross.

– WWE’s next DVD, which is dedicated to Batista entitled “I Walk Alone” will be released on Tuesday. The DVD set will contain three DVD’s. You can pre-order it by clicking here.

Nick Bollea, son of WWE Hall of Famer Hulk Hogan is currently training to be a pro wrestler with former WWE wrestler Rikishi.

Rob Van Dam was on the Between the Ropes radio show this week, and when asked if he would be at Bound for Glory, he made it seem that he would be at this weekends PPV, but not in a wrestling form.

– WWE Hall of Famer Captain Lou Albano passed away at 3:30am on October 14th. He had been suffering heart complications from a recent illness. He was admitted to hospice care, and had recently been sent home where hopice care would be taken care of there. His family and friends were surrounding him at the time of his passing. His passing has made national headlines, his death has been covered by CNN, FOX News, MTV and countless other main stream media.

– In one of the most shocking pieces of news for the week, Shane McMahon resigned from World Wrestling Entertainment this week, and it will be effective the first day of 2010. It was first announced on the WWE Corporate web site in a press release, and shortly there after a message from Shane was posted on WWE.com. It is believed at this time that Shane will end up helping his mother with her Senatorial bid. Shane is said to be financially well off.
