WWE Smackdown on MyNetwork TV
Taped in Bridgeport, Conn.

[Q1] The show opened with a shot of Triple H making his ring entrance and being attacked from behind by Jeff Hardy. Jim Ross and Tazz called the action as the wrestlers fought their way down to ringside. Vickie and Chavo Guerrero walked out. Chavo tried to break up the fight, but he was quickly pushed aside. Vickie called for reinforcements. Several referees and agents came out to pull Hunter and Hardy apart.

Vickie stood between the wrestlers and threw a fit. Hunter broke free and Vickie was knocked down during the melee. Chavo laughed at Vickie. “This is my show,” Vickie yelled. Hunter broke free and took another shot at Hardy. They continued to pull away from the referees to fire shots at one another until the referees led Hunter up the entrance ramp… [C]

Powell’s POV: Hot and unexpected opening. The announcers did a nice job of establishing that Hunter and Hardy would meet in the main event.

After the break, the announcers recapped the brawl and directly stated that the main event between Hunter and Hardy would still take place later in the show…

1. R-Truth defeated MVP in 3:45. MVP was already in the ring, so no televised entrance. R-Truth performed his usual entrance routine and carried the Slammy Award with him. The announcers plugged one of the company magazines while R-Truth performed his song. In the end, R-Truth rolled up MVP out of nowhere and scored the pin.

After the match, MVP took the mic and asked the live crowd if they thought him losing was funny. “This is my life we’re talking about, man, my career,” he said. He said he went from being the highest paid performer on Smackdown to having almost nothing. He said it’s supposed to be the happiest time of the year. He said he still has his pride and still has more money than anyone in the crowd. “I always will be better than you,” MVP said.

[Q2] Mr. Kennedy’s entrance music interrupted MVP’s rant. Kennedy stood on the stage and plugged his movie (available January 6). He said it’s the gift that keeps on giving. He said MVP should consider his words a message of holiday cheer and then delivered his Mr. Kennedy…Kennedy line… [C]

Powell’s POV: Nothing memorable about the match. Just a throwaway television match. MVP’s post-match promo was solid and he’s doing a nice job of showing frustration with his losing streak. The Mr. Kennedy interruption was really weak and just a lame plug for his DVD. If nothing else, the live crowds are reacting positively to Kennedy. By the way, Chris Shore is out sick tonight, so you’re stuck with me again.

A Slammy Award recap aired… A highlight video showcased the Triple H vs. Jeff Hardy feud… Static filled the screen and a new character appeared on the screen. He talked about walking in darkness his entire life. He stated that for over a decade he has searched and now he has others who will follow. “Your immortal power is all that I require,” he said. “Now the prophecy shall be realized”…

Powell’s POV: Raven-like mumbo jumbo. Sounds like the new guy is targeting the Undertaker.

Backstage, The Brian Kendrick hit on the Bella Twins until Carlito and Primo showed up. Ezekiel Jackson entered the scene and asked if there was a problem. Kendrick got cocky and asked the Colons if they had a problem. “I didn’t think so,” he said. He said he would see Primo in the ring. After they left, Carlito claimed he was going to attack “the big guy,” but the ladies were present… [C]

Powell’s POV: Good to see Kendrick again. He hasn’t been featured prominently lately. I really enjoy his character and I’m intrigued by Big Zeke.

[Q3] Another Slammy recap aired. This time it was Miz and Morrison accepting their award…

2. The Brian Kendrick (w/Ezekiel Jackson) pinned Primo (w/Carlito) in 7:30. Tazz noted that Kendrick wasn’t so cocky when Zeke wasn’t around during the backstage pre-tape with the Colons. Primo controlled the action down the stretch, but he was distracted by Zeke shoving his brother into the ring steps. Kendrick used the distraction to his advantage by kicking the middle rope into Primo’s groin as he was reentering the ring. Kendrick used an inside cradle to score the pin…

The announcers hyped Hardy vs. Hunter for later in the show… [C]

Powell’s POV: Good television match with Kendrick and Primo. I got a kick out of the way Zeke begged off when Carlito approached him and then just shoved him into the steps. I also like the way they are constantly pushing the big Hardy vs. Hunter main event. However, that match and the Slammy recaps have received more hype than Armageddon thus far.

The latest DX merchandise plug aired. They were pimping their own t-shirt. Has anyone else noticed that the cartoon version of HBK looks nothing like him? They also pimped their bears and took turns mocking each other. Hunter took another jab at Shawn losing his hair…

[Q4] 3. Hurricane Helms defeated Shelton Benjamin in a non-title match in 4:45. Shelton dominated the offense, but Helms hit a cross body block off the top rope and scored the pin. Afterward, Tazz entered the ring and interviewed Helms, who said he believes it’s time for a new U.S. Champion. “I’m not saying, I’m just saying,” he concluded…

Powell’s POV: Not much crowd reaction to Helms after the match. The fans seemed like they enjoyed the match and were pleasantly surprised by the finish, but the “I’m just saying” line doesn’t appear to be catching on as much as it should be after all the Hurripop segments.

The announcers hyped The Cutting Edge with Matt Hardy as the special guest for after the break… [C] Did You Know? WWE offers free tickets to military personnel?…

Edge hosted the Cutting Edge. The ring was covered with a tarp with Edge’s logo, and there were two chairs set up in the ring. Edge accused Hunter of attacking Jeff Hardy on the morning of the Survivor Series. He insincerely shook his head in disgust and claimed that fans were pointing their fingers at him despite all the evidence against Hunter. Edge introduced Matt Hardy as a man he has a lot of history with and a man who will be facing Vladimir Kozlov at the pay-per-view.

[Q5] Ross said Hardy and Edge share a lot of things together (funny), particularly a strong, strong dislike. Hard came out wearing jeans and a t-shirt with the ECW Title belt draped over his shoulder. Matt blamed Edge for attacking his brother. “I blame you know because I know what you’re capable of, Edge,” Matt said. “I know more than anyone that you’re the scummiest person on the face of this planet.”

Edge told Matt to take the blinders off. Edge said there are a lot of people who want Jeff out of the picture. He mentioned Undertaker as a suspect, but stated that all the evidence points to Hunter. Hardy wasn’t buying it and said he wants the truth. Edge said the only reason that Matt is getting involved in his brother’s business is that nobody cares about Matt.

Edge said Matt might be the ECW Champion, but they wouldn’t even be having the discussion if Matt had been attacked. Edge said no one gives a damn about Matt, who looked hurt by the comment. Suddenly, Matt threw a punch at Edge and knocked him off his stool. Vladimir Kozlov walked to ringside. Edge took a cheap shot at Matt and left him for Kozlov, who beat the hell out of Hardy and left him lying… [C]

Powell’s POV: The only one who seems to care about who attacked Jeff Hardy is Edge. The creative team hasn’t done a good job of making the Hardy mystery a real topic of discussion with the exception of Edge’s promos. Are they setting up Matt as the jealous brother? Could it eventually be revealed that Matt attacked his own brother? It would be an interesting twist, but they have to do a better job of making people care about the mystery of who attacked Jeff.

A recap of Great Khali winning a Slammy aired. Yes, they actually replayed Jillian Hall singing with all the idiotic dancing that only Vince McMahon and Brian Gewirtz could love…

4. Great Khali (w/Runjin Singh) defeated Zach Ryder and Curt Hawkins in a handicap match in 1:20. Total squash.

Powell’s POV: The Slammy winners are all bringing the awards to the ring with them, which looks cheesy. It’s one thing when heels do it, but I don’t like the babyfaces doing it. It’s not like musicians who win Grammys show up with the awards whenever they perform in concert. By the way, am I the only person concerned that the Edgeheads are about to be wished the best in their future endeavors? I hope not.

[Q6] Backstage, Eve interviewed Triple H. Hunter said Jeff seems to believe Edge’s accusation regarding the Survivor Series attack. Hunter said Jeff isn’t a big enough blip on his radar to warrant an attack. “Don’t flatter yourself, Jeff,” he said. He added that Hardy wouldn’t be around if he had attacked him… [C]

Powell’s POV: Hardy wasn’t a big enough blip on Hunter’s radar? Good intense promo, as usual, but I didn’t care for that line because it makes Hardy seem insignificant to Hunter.

The announcers recapped the Matt Hardy storyline and said they were hoping to get an update on his condition following Kozlov’s attack…

5. The Bella Twins defeated Natalya and Maryse in 4:45. Cool spot at 1:30 with one of the Bellas going for a flying mare and Natalya flipping her over in a good display of power. Later, Natalya picked up one of the Bellas, but the other twin drop kicked her sister’s back to put her in a pin position.

Powell’s POV: Maryse has made dramatic improvement in the facial expression category. She ranks right up there with Victoria as my favorite Smackdown Diva.

Backstage, Eve interviewed Vladimir Kozlov, who said it doesn’t matter who wins the Triple Threat match at the pay-per-view. “I have lost my tolerance,” he said. “Everyone must fall”… The announcers hyped Hunter vs. Hardy again…

Powell’s POV: Good, short promo from Vlad.

[Q7] [C] The announcers ran through the pay-per-view lineup… The announcers recapped the Hunter and Hardy brawl that started the show… Triple H made his ring entrance. He spat his water and then they cut to commercial… [C]

6. Jeff Hardy fought Triple H to a no-contest in 16:55. Early in the match, Hardy caught Hunter with a dropkick through the ropes and then dove off the ring apron onto him at ringside. Hardy used the ring steps as a springboard and dove onto Hunter, but barely caught him and slammed into the guardrail. Tazz said it was an extreme moment and stated that Hardy wrestles every match like it’s his last. With both men down, Ross pointed out that Edge had to be watching with a big smile on his face. Nice call by both announcers.

[Q8] [C] After the break, Hunter took control of the offense by pinning Hardy’s shoulders down and striking him with several punches. Hunter followed up with a suplex and a knee drop for a nearfall. Later, Hardy came back and scored a couple nearfalls of his own, but none that were particularly convincing. At 14:15, Hunter hit a spinebuster for the first quality nearfall of the match.

A short time later, Hunter went for the Pedigree, but Jeff fought out and immediately ran the ropes for a Whisper in the Wind for his first good nearfall of the match. Hardy hit a facebuster and whipped his t-shirt to the crowd. He started to go toward the top rope, but Hunter cut him off. Hardy went for a shoulder block between the ropes and Hunter caught him in Pedigree position, but Hardy escaped again.

Hardy went for the Swanton Bomb, but Hunter moved. A short time later, Edge hit the ring and speared both men to end the match. Edge raised the title belt over his head and then left the ring. “The ultimate opportunist picks his spot again,” Tazz said. Edge backed up the ramp with the belt above his head while soaking up the boos. Ross asked what would happen in 48 hours. Ross concluded by asking, “Will history be repeated or will history be made this Sunday at Armageddon?”…

Powell’s POV: Good match and a logical finish. I was surprised that Edge’s attack was so brief. You’d think he would have dished out more punishment while he had the chance. Overall, a fun show with good final hype for the WWE Title match at Armageddon. Check back tomorrow for the WWE Smackdown Hitlist.
